Leading Emerging and Diverse Scientists to Success (LEADS) is for is for early career faculty from the following Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs)*:
- Charles R. Drew University
- Hampton University
- Howard University
- Meharry Medical College
- Morehouse University
- North Carolina Central University
- University of Hawaii Manoa
- Universidad De Puerto Rico
- University of Texas at San Antonio
*Participants from RCMIs are also welcome to apply.
Prospective Scholars
LEADS is an intensive virtual training program designed to help you launch your research career. The ultimate goal of LEADS is for Scholars to submit a grant in October of their second year.
Applicants should be:
- An early career faculty enrolled at one of the eight participating MSIs listed above (or at an RCMI)
- Actively engaged in research
- Prepared to participate in a two-year fellowship consisting of at least 8 modules in year 1 and 6 skills sprints in year 2. Note that Year 2 involves a more flexible time commitment.
- Able to devote at least 20% of their time to completing the program
- Able to meet with their advisor monthly
- Prepared to complete an NIH-required online Customized Career Development Plan
- Be able to submit an NIH grant in October of their second year
Scholars will gain:
- Critical knowledge and skills necessary for launching their research
- Opportunities for hands-on practice
- Expert feedback
- The chance to network with colleagues from a range of backgrounds and institutions
