Dr. Sanders is an Associate Professor of adolescent medicine, pediatrics and internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She has a joint appointment in Infectious Diseases, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health’s Departments of Epidemiology and Health, Behavior and Society. She completed her medical degree at the University of Virginia, MPH and ScM at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency at University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospitals, and adolescent medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Her area of clinical expertise focuses on optimizing the care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning/queer youth and youth living with HIV. She serves as the Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Subspecialty Director, Medical Director of the Pediatric and Adolescent HIV/AIDS Program, Director of the PrEP Program, co-Director of the Emerge Gender and Sexuality Clinic the Harriet Lane Clinic at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center and the co-Director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Scientific Working Group, Johns Hopkins Center for AIDS Research. National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA, 1R01DA043089-01) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Baltimore City Health Department fund her work.

She has served nationally and internationally in the areas of adolescent health and HIV. She has been an active member of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM) serving on multiple committees and the board of directors and on the Adolescent Medicine Sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics. She currently serves on the Associate Professor Promotions Committee, International AIDS Society Governing Council, Scholarship Program, and Stigma Advisory Board; Collaborative Initiative for Paediatric HIV Education and Research; the AIDS 2022 Abstract Review and AIDS 2022 Track D Committees; the Research Review Committee of the American Board of Pediatrics, American Sexual Health Association, and the Board of Directors of the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS). She has received multiple awards including the Johns Hopkins University Diversity Leadership Council’s Diversity Recognition Award for her work with LGBTQ youth and been selected to present her work on Capitol Hill.
