Gregory B. Carey (Greg) serves as Assistant Dean of Student Research and Education, Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Executive Director of Student Research and Community Outreach at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM). He received his PhD in Biochemistry from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia (VCU/MCV), Richmond, VA. Dr. Carey’s graduate, postdoctoral and independent research focused on investigating life and death signals in cancer and especially lymphoma. His most recent studies investigated the RedOx economy in lymphoma and his team made the unexpected finding that cellular derivatizing and repurposing reactive oxygen species led to enhanced cancer growth and survival. He completed postdoctoral studies at the Guthrie Research Foundation, Sayre PA and the Jerome H. Holland Laboratory of the American Red Cross, Rockville, MD before being recruited to the faculty at University of Maryland School of Medicine where he is tenured.
Dr. Carey is a passionate teacher and mentor and is dedicated to broadening diversity, inclusion, achievement and participation in science and medicine. As a lab P.I., he has mentored students and trainees across a continuum from grade school to the junior faculty levels. A large proportion (>40%) of his trainees are persons historically underrepresented in biomedical research and healthcare. Dr. Carey has developed and/or leads NIH- and State of Maryland-funded programs and he serves as either PI or Co-I. Trainees in these programs include grade school, undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and medical students. Alumni from these programs exceed 400 in number and alumni are actively engaged in pursuit of higher degrees or, are serving as terminal-degreed professionals in research and healthcare. In recognition of his service and leadership, Dr. Carey has received a number of institutional, University System of Maryland, School of Medicine, State of Maryland- and national-level awards for excellence in service, teaching training and mentoring. He is the cofounder, President and CEO of a new not-for-profit foundation, EmPAcT, Inc. (Empowering People Through Access and Training) which is already supporting research and training excellence.
