Antonio T. Baines teaches and conducts cancer research as an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, NC. He has secondary appointments in the Department in Pharmacology and the Curriculum in Toxicology and Environmental Medicine in the School of Medicine at UNCChapel Hill. As a cancer biologist, Antonio validates novel molecular targets in pancreatic cancer to aid in making potential therapeutics as well as has an interest in health disparities observed for this dismal disease. He has various research publications in cancer journals and has received research funding from NIH and industry. He is often invited to present his research at various universities.
After graduating with a B.S. in biology as a STEM honors student from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, VA, Antonio earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Arizona studying the molecular mechanisms underlying chemoprevention agents and potential treatments against colon cancer. After receiving his Ph.D., he became a teaching/research postdoctoral fellow at UNC-Chapel Hill conducting research in pharmacology and molecular therapeutics for pancreatic cancer at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. After completion of the fellowship, he continued studying pancreatic cancer as a faculty member at NCCU.
Antonio has held various leadership positions and received numerous awards. Currently, he serves as a Council member for the Society of Toxicology and is a member of a leadership committee for the American Association for Cancer Research and a member of a NIH Advisory Board. In the past, Antonio served as a Research Director for the UNC System Office, a Faculty Fellow in the Dean’s Office, and as the Director of the Integrated Biosciences Ph.D. Program at NCCU. Related to awards, Antonio has received various awards such as the University Teaching Award, Society of Toxicology Undergraduate Educator Award, American Association for Cancer Research Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Scholar Award, and the Outstanding Scientist and Champion of Research Excellence Award. Antonio is devoted to helping to diversify the next generation of scientists and physicians.
