Ana M. Gamero, Ph.D.
Associate Professor of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry

Dr. Ana Gamero directs a research lab focused on the study of cancer and inflammatory diseases. As an Associate Professor, she is committed to higher learning, teaching, mentoring and service at Temple University’s Lewis Katz School of Medicine. Dr. Gamero holds secondary appointments within the Department of Cancer and Cell Biology and the Fels Cancer Institute for Personalized Medicine. Previously, she served as the Program Director of STEP-UP (Short-Term Education Program for Undergraduate and Predoctoral students) and is currently a Faculty Scholar in the Office of Health, Equity Diversity, and Inclusion and a Faculty Advisor for the Latinx Medical Student Association. She serves on the MD/PhD advisory, Graduate Program Admissions, Academic Standards and Promotion, and Tenure Committee Chair committees.
Dr. Gamero, originally from Peru, received her B.S. in Biological Sciences and Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of South Florida. She conducted postdoctoral studies in Molecular Immunology at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Gamero established her first independent research lab at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) where she discovered a passion for mentoring, as a sponsor for several NCI-intramural undergraduate research programs, including those supporting underserved and underrepresented minority students. Dr. Gamero has been a faculty member at Temple University since 2008 and has authored 50+ publications in her field.
Dr. Gamero has received many distinguished accolades, including the AACR Minority Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award, AACR Special Conference on Colon Cancer Minority Faculty Scholar in Cancer Research Award, an NIH-NRSA F32 postdoctoral fellowship and NCI’s Career Development Award. At Temple, she has been recognized with the Early Research Investigator Award, the Women in Science and Medicine Mentoring Award, the Graduate/Non-MD Professional Program Teaching Award, and the Faculty Recognition Award by the Student Diversity Council. Dr. Gamero serves on the editorial board for the journals Cytokine and the Journal of Interferon and Cytokine Research and is the Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Immunology. She is also an ad hoc grant reviewer for NIH.
