ICRE Alum Dr. Tamar Krishnamurti Wins 2020 Kuno Award
Tamar Krishnamurti, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and an alum (‘20) of the Clinical and Translational Science Scholars Program, recently won the 2020 Kuno Award for applied science. The Kuno Award is given by the S&R Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting talented artists and scientists involved in work for charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes.

ICRE Alum Dr. John Szymusiak Appointed to Leadership Roles in the Department of Pediatrics
Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics John Szymusiak, MD, MS, FAAP, was recently named the Associate Vice Chair for Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) for the Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Dr. Szymusiak joined the Paul C. Gaffney Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine in 2017 following completion of his Master of Science in Medical Education at the Institute for Clinical Research Education.

Utibe R. Essien, MD, MPH, was selected by Business Insider as one of 30 leaders under 40 who are working to transform U.S. healthcare. Dr. Essien is an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and an alumnus (‘20) of the Institute for Clinical Research Education’s Career Education and Enhancement for Health Care Research Diversity (CEED) Program. He is also the Director of the CEED II Program for Medical Students.

Dr. Doris Rubio Named a Finalist for 2020 ATHENA Award
The Institute for Clinical Research Education’s Director Doris Rubio, PhD, was named a finalist for the 2020 ATHENA Award. The ATHENA Awards Program of Greater Pittsburgh recognizes exceptional women who demonstrate excellence in their profession, contribute to their community, and help other women and/or girls to succeed through mentorship.

KL2 Alumnus Dr. Hawre Jalal Analyzes the Rise and Fall of Overdose Deaths in the U.S.
A University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health study published September 15 in the journal Addiction analyzed the minor decrease in drug overdose deaths in 2018 and how some have misinterpreted this dip in deaths as being a result of U.S. efforts to reduce the overdose epidemic.

ICRE to Recognize Class of 2020 with Virtual Celebration
Many academic programs at the University of Pittsburgh and across the country have had to forgo their traditional, in-person graduation ceremonies this spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Institute for Clinical Research Education also had to cancel its commencement ceremony.

CSTP Trainee’s Team Wins 2nd Place in the Randall Family Big Idea Competition
Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP) trainee and 4th year medical student Stephen Canton, along with Dukens LaBaze, MD, an orthopedic surgery resident, won second place in this year’s University of Pittsburgh Innovation Institute’s Randall Family Big Idea Competition.

Dr. Carla Spagnoletti Receives the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award
Carla Spagnoletti, MD, MS, was named a recipient of the prestigious Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award in early March. The Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence by members of the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty, and is accompanied by a cash prize to the faculty member and a grant to support their teaching activities.
