Dr. Carla Spagnoletti Receives the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award
Carla Spagnoletti, MD, MS, was named a recipient of the prestigious Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award in early March. The Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes teaching excellence by members of the University of Pittsburgh’s faculty, and is accompanied by a cash prize to the faculty member and a grant to support their teaching activities. Educators are chosen for their ability to generate intellectual excitement in students and their aptitude for motivating learners to acquire the knowledge essential to personal and professional achievement. Distinguished teaching, as defined by the award criteria, implies sustained commitment, effectiveness in helping students achieve meaningful goals, and overall teaching excellence.
Dr. Spagnoletti's teaching focuses on professional development, patient-doctor communication, and internal medicine. She serves in several educational leadership roles. She oversees approximately one dozen fellows in her role as Director of the Academic Clinician-Educators Scholars Fellowship in General Internal Medicine, and over 30 post-graduate students in her role as Director of the Master of Science and Certificate Programs in Medical Education at the Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE). She is also the course director for Advanced Medical Interviewing in the medical school and director of the Teaching Communication Skills course at the ICRE. She has received awards from the Society of General Internal Medicine and other national professional organizations for her scholarship and mentorship in medical education and for her leadership accomplishments.
The Distinguished Teaching Award is one of seven categories of awards given by the chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh to recognize the talents and dedication of faculty and staff members as well as outstanding University contributions in the fields of innovation and diversity. Dr. Spagnoletti was one of five faculty members chosen to receive the Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020.
Congratulations, Dr. Spagnoletti!
