PhD in Health Professions Education
Created to expand training opportunities for educators, researchers, and leaders in the health sciences who aspire to become leaders in health professions education, administration, and research.
The PhD in Health Professions Education designed by the Institute of Clinical Research Education (ICRE) at the University of Pittsburgh, trains clinician-educators and educational scholars capable of leading innovation, research, and curriculum reform across the health professions. Tailored for working professionals, the program combines rigorous foundational coursework with flexible, applied specialization and scholarly research.

Dedicated training in educational ethics, culturally responsive teaching, mentorship, grant writing, and faculty development—structured to support scholar-practitioner growth and aligned with professional standards. Students will be guided by ICRE and affiliated faculty members with active research portfolios and experience in educational scholarship.

The PhD in HPE was intentionally designed to reflect the collaborative realities of modern health profession education. Students will engage with a range of health sciences perspectives on curricular design, assessment simulation, leadership, and educational research.

Designed as a flexible part– or full– time program, the program allows for individual pacing. A cohort model encourages peer collaboration and sustained engagement through journal clubs, teaching practicums, and professional development seminars.
