Sonya Borrero, MD, MS, Associate Professor of Medicine, was recently named the winner of the 2019 SGIM Mid-Career Research Mentorship Award. Dr. Borrero directs the Center for Women's Health Research and Innovation and the ICRE’s Career Education and Enhancement for Health Care Research Diversity (CEED) Program for Medical Students. She also holds several leadership roles in VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System programs. She will receive the award at SGIM’s Annual Meeting in May 2019.

Dr. Borrero has an unwavering commitment to assisting trainees at all levels in their research pursuits as well as their career development. This dedication to mentorship is what made her so exceptionally qualified for this award. Candidates for this honor are superb mid-career clinician investigators who are actively engaged in research and in the mentorship of junior investigators.

Beyond carrying out the responsibilities that come with her various leadership roles, Dr. Borrero conducts research on contraceptive and pregnancy decision-making in marginalized populations, with the ultimate aim of advancing reproductive health equity. Through her research, which has been consistently supported by competitive funding sources, Dr. Borrero seeks to engage graduate students whenever possible and identify opportunities to allow them to further their own research goals.

Dr. Borrero has been incredibly influential in the careers of dozens of junior investigators, all of whom are full of praise for her selfless guidance and supreme dedication. Congratulations to Dr. Borrero on this outstanding achievement!
